Paying it Forward

I love looking at other peoples blogs and their jewelry and beads. Tonight I ran across an interesting blog by Wendy Hearn. Her post may be found here: . Simply put this is a pay it forward, pass it on, a random act of kindess. I have copied the rules straight from Wendy’s blog, (hope that is how it is done). Now its your turn – Pass it on.

So here is the nitty gritty.

Creative people are adventurous! So, if you would like to participate, please send me a comment and the first five people will receive something from me in the mail.
Here are the rules, and happy posting!
This offer does have some restrictions and limitations so please read carefully:

1. I make no guarantees that you will like what I make. This is an adventure!
2. What I create will be just for you with love and good wishes. It will be made of actual materials, not of cyberspace.
3. It will be done this year (2009).
4. I will not give you any clue what it’s going to be!
5. In return, all you need to do is cut and paste this text on your Blog (from “Creative People are…” and create Five things for the first 5 people to respond to your post.
6. Send your mailing address after I contact you.

IMPORTANT: This offer is null and void if you do not post on your own blog to pay this forward. Would love it if you could join in!!!

To help me in choosing what to make and send you, I will be reading through your blog to get an idea of your likes and dislikes so that I hope you get somthing that you will love!

When deciding what beads or jewelry to make it seems to be all about choices – choice of color- style- size, what to charge, what not to charge, how many to make, when to make them.

There is some help out there if you take the time to look for it. A quick internet search will yield you the Spring ‘09 fashion color forecast. Spring and summer fashions are hitting the racks and the New York Spring Fashion Week that was held in September ‘08 are all great resources for making your choice of what colors to use this spring.

But basically it all comes down to personal preference. Making the best guess I can and hoping I made the correct decision. So check back in the upcoming weeks as I start posting my Spring ’09 bead collection. I think you will be pleased.

It’s all about Goals!

Hello all, glad you chose to join me today. It’s been a while since I have taken the time to blog. I am going to make it a point to do this every week from now on. I can’t tell you what day but at least one day a week. It’s all about the goals. If you don’t have goals then you can’t grow a person. So my goals are going to be simple to start with. I will blog every week and share with you what I have been making, what new items I have posted in my store and any updates on my website and what I have been learning. Sounds simple enough.

So let’s start with what I have been making. Well not much. I have upgraded to a minor torch and I am thrilled with it. But as with anything new it is like starting over. I have been working on simple spacer beads and finding the sweet spot in the flame. I did take some time to make a cute little winter bead for the bead exchange at my Lampworking group this weekend.

I have also made a bunch of wire wrap earrings a lot of which I have posted in my etsy store. I also reposted a big hole bead also. I am thinking about getting a bead lining tool so that I can start lining them in silver and copper. I just love copper and the look you get when you add it to glass.

I have not updated my website in a while. I really am not sure where I want to go with it. I liked what I started, but then I saw someone else’s that just blew me away. But she states that she did it herself. She did a very good job. So I am working on making a decision on what I want to do with it for next year. I really have not promoted it very much but it feels good just to know that I have it and will not have to worry about someone else using the name.

As for learning something new. Well I was lucky enough that last year I received several books from a friend and they have wonderful tutorials in them and then I also have a subscription to another glass magazine that has instructions. I have made a list of what things I want to learn and I am working on that list. First up was a crayon bead or what I call a stripe bead. Since it is encased I have learned several things while making them including patience while encasing.

The other thing I am playing with is color. I make it a point to put two or more colors together that I think would not normally go together and see what they look like. I have had some interesting mixes. But that is what it is all about. Mixing and matching to make something new and exciting.

Well that’s about all I can think of today. So I am off here til next time. Please check back and if you have any comments feel free to let me know.

Lessons Learned

Its been a while but I think that we can learn a lesson here. You see I have all these pieces of paper and all these millions of log ins. What is up with that? Seems on the internet every where you go you need a log in. I need a better way to keep up with all those log in names and passwords. Tonight I think I found it I put them all in one spot on one list. Maybe it will not take me so long to get back here.

I have been busy while away. I have several more items posted on etsy. I tried to work on my website. I really am not very good at that. But I will learn someday. Sales are getting better, my beads are getting better. I have to say practice does make perfect. But I still need lots more practice. But have a look at my etsy site and see what I mean. Much better bead making these days. Oh and the Firecrackers had another meeting. I love getting together with the group. We have such a good time and I feel like I have known them all forever.

Well check out the new beads and I will check back in soon. Have a fun summer.

The Studio

Well I guess I can finally move in my studio. I am so glad this day has come. I now have a building, work benches, somewhere to store my glass. What I still need it exhaust, they are working on this, and electricity, that is in the process also. They should both be done in a week or two.

The important thing to me is I can now follow my plan. I have made a plan and hopefully I will have enough decipline to stick to it. I have decided when for the most part I will torch, when I will list things on etsy and just beads. I will get finished with my website and have it published and I will  post things there. I just hope that I can live up to my own expectations.

Well until next time. Have fun and be careful.

When I am not Catchen the Sun

Why did I name my studio Catchen the Sun. Well most of my ideas come when I am laying on a float at Norris Lake ‘catchen’ sun and Flinking.

What is flinking you ask? Why floating and drinking = flinking. I love the time we spend on Norris with my sister-in-law and her family at their houseboat. Everyone there is wonderful and we have the best time. So when it came time to name my lampwork bead and jewelry business I decided on Catchen the Sun. To give honor to when I am most creative, when I am flinking.

Now if I ever think that I might have a chance of having the time and the money to flink on my own house boat, I better get it in gear and get my studio finished and some things posted on my etsy site. Finish my website and get it up and running. General Business type things that a more organized person would be doing right now.

Hello world!
